Greenaction Victory for Environmental Justice at Arizona Superfund Site!

U.S. EPA incinerator shut down due to toxic pollution!

Greenaction and Children for a Safe Environment went door to door in the low-income next to the Superfund site in Goodyear, Arizona to alert residents about a dioxin-emitting incinerator near their homes. We were shocked to find many people did not know they were living next to a toxic incinerator, and many did not even know there was a heavily contaminated Superfund site across the street. Residents were grateful to us for informing them about the toxic threat, and many attended the U.S. EPA meeting. In the face of the community and Greenaction protest, and unable to counter Greenaction's good science that showed dioxin was being emitted from the incinerator, the EPA soon announced the incinerator would no longer operate.

Greenaction had discovered that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency had operated a toxic waste incinerator for four years at the Phoenix Goodyear Airport Superfund Site without disclosing to the community the potential health impacts. The incinerator had burned chemical contamination at the former Unidynamics Phoenix facility in Goodyear. Toxic chemicals were emitted from the incinerator, yet this information was never given to residents. Greenaction informed residents of the truth, and demanded the U.S. EPA disclose all information and investigate safer alternative treatment technologies to clean the site.

Attention Residents near Phoenix Goodyear Airport Superfund Site!

Do You Know That a U.S. EPA Toxic Waste Incinerator Has Emitted Dangerous Chemicals Into Your Air For Four Years?

Why didn't the EPA tell you the truth?

In 1994 the EPA began operating an incinerator at the Phoenix Goodyear Airport Superfund Site to burn toxic chemicals contaminating the area. Unfortunately, this incinerator does not safely or completely destroy the chemicals, and new chemicals such as the deadly dioxin are also emitted.

Dioxin is one of the most toxic chemicals known to science, and no amount is safe. Dioxin causes cancer, birth defects, as well as reproductive, immune and other illnesses at extremely low levels of exposure.

The incinerator has also broken down repeatedly and is now off. The EPA should work with the community to find a safer alternative instead of the incinerator to clean the toxic chemical contamination and protect the health of the community.
