October was first declared "National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) in 1984 by Zeneca, then an American subsidiary of a British corporation, Imperial Chemical Industries, the largest manufacturer of synthetic chemicals in the world. Signified by the pink ribbon, NBCAM and its corporate sponsors continue to promote cancer research and questionable screening by mammography while never mentioning the link between cancer and environmental pollution. Meanwhile, the cancer incidence continues to rise. The Toxic Links Coalition started the Cancer Industry tour in 1994 to expose the corporate connections to cancer covered up by NBCAM and the blatant conflicts of interest in the "cancer industry" which puts profit before public health.
