Stop Cancer Where It Starts! This October, Greenaction participated in Cancer Industry Awareness Month and worked to Expose the Scam of "Breast Cancer Awareness Month". Reclaim October, "Breast Cancer Awareness Month", as Cancer Industry Awareness Month Make the link between environmental pollution and our declining health! The 6th Annual Cancer Industry Awareness Tour Wednesday, October 27, 1999 Bay Area Cancer Survivors and friends targeted companies and agencies that profit from cancer-causing chemicals in the 6th Annual Cancer Industry Tour October 27, 1999, 12 noon, in front of Chevron Headquarters, 555 Market Street, San Francisco, CA Check out the 1998 Cancer Industry Tour Report The "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" Scam In 1984 Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) declared October Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM). When Zeneca split from ICI in 1993, they took over BCAM. Zeneca is the producer of the top selling breast cancer treatment drug, tamoxifen. They also produce pesticides, and own a chain of cancer care centers. A full profit circle&emdash; a circle of poison. Since the beginning, the focus of BCAM has been on early detection through mammography. In all of the official literature no mention of prevention or the need to find the causes of cancer is made. Think about it: More people getting mammograms means more people diagnosed, which means more tamoxifen prescriptions, which means more money for Zeneca. Zeneca recently has marketed tamoxifen for healthy women to "prevent" breast cancer, despite its serious side effects (including endometrial cancer). REAL prevention won't come in a pill, but by finding the causes and working to stop cancer where it starts! What You Can Do Join the Toxic Links Coalition! Call

Did You Know? Every 3 minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, and a man is diagnosed with prostate cancer. Cancer will occur in 8400 children in 1999, and be the leading cause of disease related death for children. Many corporations who produce chemicals known to cause cancer also produce drugs to "fight cancer". We are all exposed to industrial chemicals known to cause cancer and many other serious health problems. In fact, an average woman's breast milk today contains so many pesticides and other residues that it exceeds the limits established for commercially marketed foods in the United States! Who We Target and Why Chevron Operates the Richmond, CA oil refinery, which has a notorious track record of accidents and toxic pollution. The Richmond oil refinery releases dioxin (one of the most toxic chemicals known) into the San Francisco Bay and the air. Porter/Novelli (Public Relations Firm) Clients include Monsanto&emdash; developer and producer of Agent Orange, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH), and genetically altered "Roundup Ready Soybeans" (to be used with their pesticide Roundup) Provided free services to the American Cancer Society for over 20 years, influencing them to support the interests of P/N's paying corporate clients. American Cancer Society Downplays the risk of cancer from pesticides and other environmental factors and won't take a stand on any environmental legislation. Consistently sides with corporations during criticism of industrial agricultural pollution. PG & E Key backer of the proposed Ward Valley nuclear waste dump, which would threaten to contaminate the Colorado River and would desecrate sacred Indian land. Has refused to clean up toxics and relocate and adequately compensate residents for the toxic contamination at Midway Village, a housing complex built on land adjacent to a PG & E site in Daly City, California Bechtel Engineers and builds nuclear power plants all over the world. Ionizing radiation is a known cause of cancer. Operates a nuclear test site in Nevada that is located on traditional Western Shoshone land and is the site of over 900 nuclear explosions. Environmental Protection Agency Only after pressure by community and Toxic Link Coalition groups did the EPA list dioxin as a "high priority for immediate action." Has failed to adequately protect the public from toxic exposures. |
