Stop Diesel Pollution Campaign

Greenaction Steps Up Campaign to Reduce Diesel Pollution in Bayview/Hunters Point and Neighboring Communities

Bayview Hunters Point is one of the only places in the city where major freeways intersect, where commuter trains run through, and trucking companies park their diesel trucks and let them idle with engines on. The main school bus yard is here, as well as delivery businesses that use diesel vehicles. Due to a lot of construction, BVHP is experiencing even more diesel pollution.

Greenaction’s community outreach workers are talking to truckers, school bus drivers and businesses about how and why to reduce diesel pollution. We have been able to expand our diesel idling reduction education camapign in BVHP to include Potrero Hill, Visitation Valley and Portola thanks to support from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

Here is why stopping diesel pollution is so important:

  • Diesel exhaust contains more than 40 toxic air contaminants and diesel soot accounts for 71% of the cancer risk from all toxic air contaminants.
  • Diesel exhaust can irritate the eyes, nose, throat and lungs and can cause coughs, headaches, and nausea.
  • Diesel exhaust also contributes to smog and fine-particle pollution.
Heavy-duty diesel trucks can create the same amount of pollution as 150 cars.
  • Diesel emissions can lower resistance to respiratory infections and worsens chronic lung diseases such as asthma.
