Greenaction and Tri-City Coalition Win Big Victory
Against Alameda Incinerator in Disguise
The Tri-City Coalition for
Alternatives to Incineration is thrilled to announce that the Alameda
Public Utilities Board voted unanimously
tonight to reject a possible garbage “gasification” plant
to meet Alameda’s future energy needs.
The Tri-City Coalition was
formed last year in response to a study being done by high paid industry
consultants hired by Alameda Power
and Telecom who were encouraging the City of Alameda to pursue a garbage
gasification plant in San Leandro, Oakland or Alameda. The consultants
claimed that treating garbage through gasification was renewable energy,
making a mockery of renewable energy, and even on numerous occasions
made the false claim that there would be no emissions.
Coalition members include community members and community groups from
the three cities, and Greenaction for Health and Environmental Justice,
Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives, the Ecology Center and
others.
Our coalition documented
the fact that gasification is an incineration-like technology that
would emit dioxin and other toxic pollutants into the
air. Gasification technologies heat the waste, then burn the
waste gases – essentially an incinerator in disguise.
The coalition is encouraged that Alameda Power and Telecom has recently
increased its reliance on renewable wind power instead of pursuing
gasification, and that the Public Utilities Board decided to follow
a precautionary approach in rejecting an unproven technology that could
harm public health and the environment.
This is a real victory for health and environmental justice, the precautionary
principle, renewable energy and recycling.
