Residents to Protest Against Digging in Toxic Soils

"We Demand Permanent Relocation and a Healthy Future for Our Kids!"

Daly City, CA -- Residents of the Midway Village housing project in Daly City will continue their protests against digging in toxic soils next to their homes with a nonviolent direct action Thursday, January 6, 2000 at 10:30 a.m.. State-approved work on the controversial drainage project in Bayshore Park is exposing them to cancer-causing chemicals known to be present in the soil.

Residents are angered by the continued disruption of their lives and neighborhood - and the increased toxic threat posed by digging so close to the daycare center and homes. Residents backed by Greenaction will continue the nonviolent direct action protests that have resulted in repeated blockades of the service road to the construction site.

Midway Village is operated by the San Mateo County Housing Authority. The 150 units are occupied by 1200 people of color. Midway Village and Bayshore Park were built on land contaminated with toxic substances, notably polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PNAs), a class of compounds of which many are known carcinogens. The contaminants are from the neighboring PG&E site. Residents were not warned of the toxics when they moved into Midway Village.

Residents are demanding permanent relocation away from their toxic neighborhood, health care for their illnesses and compensation for being exposed to toxic contamination. Residents are calling on the State Department of Toxic Substances Control and the United States Environmental Protection Agency to meet with them regarding health problems they believe are caused by living in a toxic contaminated community.
