Greenaction Forces State Officials to Admit Soil is Toxic Waste Residents Call on Government Officials and PG&E to Stop Stalling on Relocation, Health Care and Compensation Daly City, CA -- Fed up with government officials' slow pace in addressing resident's concerns about living on top of PG&E's toxic waste, Midway Village residents and supporters from Greenaction held a candlelight vigil tonight on toxic contaminated Bayshore Park next to their homes. Many children from the community who play on the toxic contaminated park joined the vigil and spoke to the television reporters covering the event. The vigil received sympathetic coverage on San Francisco and San Jose TV and radio. State Department of Toxic Substances Control recently admitted to Greenaction that hazardous levels of lead were found in Bayshore Park, near homes and the daycare center. Residents were never told about this by DTSC, but the information was discovered after Greenaction inquired about the toxic content of soils being excavated during the drainage project in Bayshore Park. Some of the soil was so toxic it had to be sent to a Class I hazardous waste landfill in Kettleman City for disposal. Residents are also angry that despite promises by DTSC that the new round of soil testing would proceed rapidly, DTSC is approximately two months behind schedule. DTSC has also now stated that there will not be testing of the contaminated soils under homes, further infuriating residents who now will never know how toxic the ground they live on is. Residents and Greenaction vow to kick off a new round of protests in the coming weeks targeting both PG&E and government agencies. |
