Residents and Greenaction Disrupt Flawed Soil Testing Project at Toxic-Contaminated Midway Village! Daly City, CA -- Midway Village residents and the environmental justice organization Greenaction disrupted the beginning of controversial joint state and federal soil testing at this toxic-contaminated housing project this morning. Protesters surrounded the testing equipment, brought the work to a halt, and explained to the assembled government officials and media the many reasons we believe the testing is flawed and cannot be trusted. Many residents oppose the new testing due to years of distrust of the State Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) and EPA, years of delays in addressing residents health concerns, and the DTSC's recent breaking of their promise to test for toxic contamination under homes. Residents are furious at government statements that living on top of cancer-causing chemicals known to be present at Midway Village is safe. Residents are also angry at DTSC's failure to disclose that 20% of soil recently excavated near homes was so toxic it was sent to the Kettleman Hills Class I hazardous waste landfill, a fact discovered by Greenaction. Residents have lived in this toxic-contaminated community for decades, including ten years since the State placed Midway Village on their priority list for cleanup. Residents are tired of endless delays and excuses, and suffer from serious illnesses including cancer, rashes, bloody noses and other ailments many believe are linked to the presence of toxic chemicals under and next to their homes. Government agencies continue to completely ignore these health concerns. Residents demand permanent relocation for those who want to move, and health care and just compensation for years of living on top of toxic waste from the adjacent PG&E facility. |
