In Loving Memory
|
Bill Snelling Dear friends, Our dear friend and colleague Bill Snelling passed away Friday, February 4, 2000, from a heart attack. Bill was loved by his family and his many friends and colleagues far and wide, and we will miss him very much. I know Bill would want us to follow the advice of labor martyr Joe Hill, who urged the movement "Don't Mourn, Organize!" For the last 27 months Bill has been an invaluable activist with us at Greenaction, working tirelessly in campaigns for health and environmental justice. Bill helped co-found Greenaction, working day and night to create and build our organization that has been able to survive and win many victories in our first two years. These successes would not have been possible without Bill. Prior to Greenaction, Bill served for many years with Greenpeace. Bill continued his never-ending activism and commitment to the health of our planet and to justice until the end. In the last few weeks, Bill and Greenaction joined the low-income people of color residents of the contaminated Midway Village Housing Project in eight successful and dramatic direct action blockades of a construction site in toxic soils next to homes. Last week Bill helped organize a protest in support of the U'Wa Indigenous people of Columbia fighting oil drilling by Occidental Petroleum. The day before he passed away Bill helped represent Greenaction at a very successful "Healthy Buildings" conference promoting the elimination of toxic materials from the building industry. We all need to work even harder to carry on the work Bill was so dedicated to. The Snelling Family is requesting that people wishing to honor Bill make donations to Greenaction, in Bill's memory. The funds will be used to continue the campaigns for health and environmental justice that Bill was such an important part of. The family will soon announce plans for a memorial ceremony to be held next weekend. Donations in Bill's memory should be sent to: Greenaction
