Alerts!
New! 4/7/03 Greenaction participated in a large nonviolent action at the Port of Oakland today to protest shipments of weapons for the U.S. war against Iraq.

In an attempt to crush peaceful protest, the Oakland police violently attacked the crowd of about 700 people - opening fire on us with guns, shooting large wooden pellets, rubber bullets, tear gas, concussion grenades and more. The police repeatedly shot at peaceful protesters attempting to leave the area, and many protesters and longshore union members were shot. Some people were shot in the face, and others were shot in the back. See press coverage from SF Chronicle and SJ Mercury.

We will not be intimidated by police violence.
We will continue to raise our voices for peace and justice.

No War For Oil!

The U.S. has just 5% of the world's population, but we consume 26% of the world's oil. We import more than one-half of all oil we use.

More than 65% of the proven oil reserves are in the Middle East, with Iraq having the second largest of any nation, and only 3% are in the U.S. Our oil consumption is estimated to increase 33% within 20 years, which will double oil imports from the Persian Gulf if we don't change to renewable energy.

Many top Bush Administration officials have close ties to oil corporations, including the President, Vice President, Secretary of Defense, and National Security Advisor.

Increasing our fuel efficiency to 55mpg would save almost twice as much oil as we import from the Middle East. Proven fuel-efficient technologies exit, it's the political will that's missing.

The Bush Administration is trying to use the war to justify attacks on the environment, such as opening up our public lands, including the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, to drilling for oil.

While the Bush Administration is willing to wage war to get oil from overseas, our own communities suffer from fossil-fuel pollution from power plants, oil refineries, and gas-guzzling vehicles.

A poem for peace and justice
by Lawrence Ferlinghetti

And a vast paranoia sweeps across the land
And America turns the attack on its Twin Towers
Into the beginning of the Third World War
The war with the Third World
And the terrorists in Washington
Are drafting all the young men
And no one speaks
And they are rousting out
All the ones with turbans
And they are flushing out
All the strange immigrants
And they are shipping all the young men
To the killing fields again
And no one speaks
And when they come to round up
All the great writers and poets and painters
The National Endowment of the Arts of Complacency
Will not speak
While all the young men
Will be killing all the young men
In the killing fields again
So now is the time for you to speak
All you lovers of liberty
All you lovers of the pursuit of happiness
All you lovers and sleepers
Deep in your private dreams
Now is the time for you to speak
O silent majority
Before they come for you

Lawrence Ferlinghetti is San Francisco's first poet laureate (1998) and the owner and founder of City Lights Bookstore. This poem first appeared on the City Lights Web site (www.citylights.com).
