Kick Off The Campaign to Shut Down the Polluting PG&E Power Plant in Bayview Hunters Point

Everyone who cares about community health and environmental justice is invited!

San Francisco public school students will lead Bayview Hunters Point's first inter-generational environmental justice rally at the PG&E power plant in Hunters Point. More than 200 students and activists are expected to attend this historic, community-based event which will coincide with the PG&E Shareholder's meeting. The rally will call for total clean up of the Hunters Point area, renewable energy for the city of San Francisco, and closure of the antiquated and polluting PG&E power plant.

This event will also include: mural painting, awards presentations, park tours, a march around the entire power plant facility, and a youth-led celebration with music and performances after the rally at Herons Head Park.

Youth on Fire! is sponsored by Literacy for Environmental Justice and Linking San Francisco. Rally Speakers will include long-time Bayview residents and elders, as well as youth activists. Youth on Fire! has been organized by students and teachers at four public schools,SF Community School, James Denman Middle School, Mission High School, and Mac Ateer High School. The rally is co-sponsored by The Community First Coalition, Bayview Hunters Point Community Advocates and Greenaction for Health and Environmental Justice.

Literacy for Environmental Justice is a community-based youth empowerment and environmental justice organization. Each Year the LEJ Community Advisory Board designs a school-wide environmental justice action to educate and organize youth in the struggle for environmental health and justice. Outraged by the combined threat of the Hunters Point Toxic Shipyard fire last Fall, and plans to continue the operation of the Hunters Point power plant, this year's focus is on raising awareness of the need for immediate clean-up of the Hunters Point community. More than 10,000 children have the potential to be adversely affected by Bayview's health hazards as residents of this highly contaminated neighborhood of San Francisco. Bayview Hunters Point already suffers from extremely high rates of asthma and breast cancer. Support environmental justice for Bayview Hunters Point!
