Letter to Santa Cruz Public Works Department
May 23, 2003
Tom Bolich
Director, Public Works Department
Santa Cruz County
701 Ocean Street, Room 450
Santa Cruz, CA 95060
Dear Mr. Bolich,
On behalf of our organization’s
members and constituents in Santa Cruz County, Greenaction for Health
and Environmental Justice
requests to be notified in writing of all opportunities for public
comment regarding the proposed Waste-To-Energy facility.
In addition, we request that Public Works schedule a public hearing
immediately to take public comment on this proposal and study recently
authorized by the Board of Supervisors.
Greenaction, and our members and constituents, are extremely concerned
about this proposal that we believe is a serious threat to the health,
well-being and economy of Santa Cruz County.
Incineration, no matter how safely and responsibly done, will emit
dioxin and a wide range of highly toxic chemicals and toxic metals
into the air. Dioxin is highly toxic at even extremely low levels of
exposure, and can cause cancer, reproductive, developmental, immunological
and other health problems. Scientific studies also document that the
main source of exposure from dioxin is via the food chain, and it is
irresponsible to even consider incineration in close proximity to agricultural
areas.
Please send updates on this project and notice of meetings and hearings
on this project to us at:
Bradley Angel
Greenaction for Health and Environmental Justice
One Hallidie Plaza, Suite 760
San Francisco, CA 94102
Please let me know if you will be able to comply with this request.
Sincerely,
Bradley Angel
Executive Director
