The Covanta Waste-to-Energy Garbage
Incinerator in Crow's Landing Pollutes Our Air!

The Facts

  • A company called Covanta operates a garbage incinerator in Crow's Landing that burns about 800 tons per day of garbage (solid waste).

  • The incinerator began operations in 1989, but residents were never fully informed by the company or government officials about toxic emissions.

  • The company claims that their incinerator is "environmentally sound", but the truth is that the incinerator cannot completely or safely destroy all the waste being burned.

  • The incinerator emits dangerous toxic chemicals and toxic metals into the air, including dioxin, a cancer-causing chemical that is one of the most toxic chemicals known to science.

  • Major scientific studies prove that even low levels of dioxin can cause illnesses like cancer & birth defects.

  • In 2000 Stanislaus County officials wanted to import medical waste from across the state to be burned here, but concerned residents and Greenaction stopped that toxic threat!

  • We need more recycling, reuse and waste reduction - not incineration.
