Dump Diesel Buses! Stop the Pollution and Asthma!
Why:
- Diesel
exhaust is a known carcinogen, and causes cancer, asthma and lung
disease.
- Childhood asthma rates
have reached epidemic proportions in San Francisco.
- San Francisco is ranked
the 4th worst county in the nation for cancer risk from air pollution
MUNI is again going back
on their promise to clean up the air and switch to natural gas buses.
Despite five years of promises, MUNI is once again putting off its commitment
to replace the dirty diesel fleet with cleaner, compressed natural gas
buses.
Join concerned San Francisco
residents at a rally in front of City Hall to protest MUNI's blatant
disregard for our health. Let our Supervisors know that we won't stand
for more pollution in our city.
Sponsored by Greenaction
and the rest of the Dump Diesel Coalition.
Urge your District Supervisor
to direct MUNI to buy natural gas buses instead of diesel. A letter
or a phone call will make a tremendous difference in the fight for San
Francisco's health.

Attention San Francisco Bay Area Residents, Visitors,
and Commuters! Dump Diesel Buses!
Studies have
linked cancer and asthma to exhaust from diesel buses ... the same diesel
buses that pollute your neighborhood everyday.
Did you
know...
- The California Air Resources
Board lists soot from diesel exhaust as a toxic air contaminant and
known carcinogen that could cause 14,000 premature deaths in California.
- San Francisco ranks as
the 4th worst county in the nation for cancer risk from air pollution.
Recent EPA data suggests that diesel emissions account for 78% of
total added cancer risk.
- More kids are hospitalized
because of asthma than any other reason. A recent UCSF study shows
a direct link between diesel exhaust and asthma.
- Over 60% of MUNI's buses
run on diesel, depositing carcinogenic soot in your lungs and on your
house.
The Cleaner Alternative:
Natural Gas Buses
- Half of California's
transit agencies have already made the switch to natural gas buses.
Major cities like Los Angeles and Sacramento have found that natural
gas buses are just as reliable, and much cleaner than diesel buses.
- Switching to natural
gas buses will reduce smog and soot emissions by over 50%, thereore
significantly reducing health risks such as asthma and cancer.
- Natural gas buses are
subsidized by both federal and state agencies, which means San Francisco
can have cleaner air without spending more taxpayer dollars. In addition,
cities with natural gas fleets such as Sacramento have reported lowering
maintenance and fuel costs by 40%.
- Doctors, nurses and health
experts agree: MUNI should stop buying diesel buses and switch to
cleaner natural gas buses
