No Nuclear Waste Dump on Sacred Indian Lands! Greenaction asks everyone who cares about the environment, health and justice to urge the California legislature to support Assembly Bill 2214, the Low-Level Radiocative Waste Disposal Act sponsored by Assemblyman Fred Keeley. This legislation would prevent the state from using Ward Valley for a radioactive waste dump. Ward Valley is located in the Mojave Desert, near the Colorado River. Ward Valley has profound sacred significance for the area's Native peoples who have lived in the area since time immemorial. The Fort Mojave, Chemehuevi, Quechan, Cocopah and Colorado River Indian Tribes have led opposition to the proposed dump due to spiritual, cultural, environmental and health concerns. For over a decade the Colorado River Native Nations Alliance and the Ward Valley Coalition fought government and nuclear industry attempts to transfer the federal public lands at Ward Valley to the state for the proposed dump. This was a historic fight, culminating in a 113 day occupation of the proposed dump site in early 1997 by the Colorado River Native Nations Alliance and the Ward Valley Coalition. The occupation succeeded in preventing federal police from entering the site to allow test drilling for the dump project that would have desecrated the sacred land. With pro-nuclear George W. Bush and Dick Cheney in the White House, we must make sure that the Bush Administration cannot succeed if they attempt to transfer the federal land at Ward Valley to the State for a dump. AB 2214 will help protect Ward Valley from the nuclear threat. |
