Celebrate!

On February 12, 1998 the Fort Mojave, Chemehuevi, Quechan, Cocopah and Colorado River Indian Tribes and supporters begin what was to become a 113 day direct action and occupation of the proposed nuclear waste dump site at Ward Valley.

The U.S. government had planned to bring in drilling rigs to conduct tests for the dump project, tests which would have desecrated the sacred Indian land at Ward Valley. In defiance of federal closure and eviction orders and threats of arrest, the Indian Nations and supporters erected roadblocks and vowed to nonviolently but directly resist any government attempts to remove them from Ward Valley. Native spiritual leaders and Elders conducted ongoing religious ceremonies at the site. The federal government eventually backed down, removed their police, and finally rescinded their eviction notices and cancelled the test drilling. We won the occupation, but the fight to save Ward Valley continues.
