Gathering at Ward Valley Commemorates the Second Anniversary of the Historic Occupation and Action Background On February 12, 1998, the Fort Mojave, Chemehuevi, Quechan, Cocopah and Colorado River Indian Tribes and environmental justice supporters began a 113 day occupation of the proposed nuclear waste dump site at Ward Valley. The action was taken to stop attempts by the federal government to evict the Tribes and supporters from the area to allow for test drilling which would have desecrated the sacred land. Ceremonies were held throughout the occupation, barricades were built, and the land was successfully defended: the test drilling was canceled. We are now on the verge of victory, and your help is needed to save Ward Valley once and for all. Let Governor Davis and the nuclear industry know that we will never allow a radioactive waste facility to be built at Ward Valley near the Colorado River, on sacred Indian land and critical habitat for the threatened desert tortoise! We will continue to defend Ward Valley until final victory! Ward Valley is located 22 miles west of Needles, California, Water Road exit off of Interstate 40. For more information, contact:

The Colorado River Native Nations Alliance Gather February 12-13, 2000 The Colorado River Native Nations Alliance came together for a Commemoration, Ceremony and Gathering February 12-13, 2000. The gathering was at Ward Valley, 20 miles west of Needles, California, at the site of the proposed dump. This event commemorated the two year anniversary of the beginning of the 113 day occupation of the proposed dump site that prevented federal officials and police from evicting the Tribes and supporters from the area and stopped test drilling which would have desecrated the sacred land at Ward Valley. The Colorado River Native Nations Alliance is comprised of the Fort Mojave, Chemehuevi, Quechan, Cocopah and Colorado River Indian Tribes who have united in this effort. While we are on the verge of final victory at Ward Valley, Governor Davis has still refused to stop the project once and for all. Send a message that we will continue to defend Ward Valley from any proposed nuclear waste facility! |
