Tell the Bay Area Air District: No New Permit for Toxic Polluter Red Star/Lesaffre The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has scheduled a "public workshop" to review and discuss proposed new regulations (Regulation 8, Rule 53) that supposedly requires controls of emissions from yeast manufacturing operations. Yeast manufacturing emissions include ethanol, acetaldehyde (a toxic air contaminant and known carcinogen) and other compounds. Emissions are odorous, and are a constant nuisance and health threat to West Oakland residents. This meeting is a scam by the Air District to justify issuing a new permit to this polluter that is in constant violation of their current permit. Red Star/Lesaffre has applied to the Air District for a new five year Title V Clean Air Act permit. The community and environmental justice groups want the permit denied due to the company's failure of emissions tests and due to their failure to stop the ongoing noxious odors. Instead of denying the permit, the Air District will likely attempt to issue the permit with this new rule included, and give the company time to "come into compliance." This facility has never been in compliance due to their odor problems, and the Air District has never made them comply with their permit. No more violations! No more toxic pollution from Red Star/Lesaffre. It is time for this polluter to be closed down! |
