Are You Tired of that NASTY Smell?

It's Red Star Yeast!

What is Red Star Yeast and Why should you care?

Red Star Yeast is a facility on the corner of 5th and Mandela and it is polluting our air in West Oakland. Not only does their smokestack continually pump that horrible odor into the air that we all have to breathe, but it also emits chemicals such as: acetaldehyde, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, and sulfur dioxide.

People who live near toxic facilities such as Red Star Yeast are at an increased risk of suffering from severe health problems. Kids in the neighborhood already suffer from high rates of asthma. The toxic chemicals emitted from Red Star Yeast can cause cancer, birth defects, brain damage, sterility, hormonal changes, damage to the kidneys, as well as having other negative effects on the skin and sensory organs.

Are the chemicals that are being emitted by Red Star Yeast harmful?

YES:

  • Acetaldehyde is listed as a known carcinogen and is ranked as one of the most hazardous compounds (in the worst 10%) known to harm human health and environment.

  • Red Star Yeast emits approximately 27,400 pounds of Acetaldehyde into West Oakland's air each year.

  • When Carbon Monoxide enters the blood stream it is dangerous because it reduces the amount of oxygen to the body's organs and tissues.

  • Nitrogen Oxides have suspected harmful health effects on the: respiratory tract, reproductive system, central nervous system, immune system, and the skin or sense organs.

  • Sulfur Dioxide affects breathing and is a primary contributor to acid rain.

It is time to protect the people's health in WEST OAKLAND
