Statement of Opposition to Red Star Yeast's Continued Operations at 5th and Mandela Street, West Oakland We oppose the continued operations of Red Star Yeast at 5th and Mandela Streets in West Oakland. We demand that the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and the United States Environmental Protection Agency deny the Title V Clean Air Act permit renewal application from Red Star Yeast. Red Star Yeast pollutes the West Oakland community with cancer-causing chemicals and noxious odors that pose an unacceptable health risk. Red Star Yeast has never complied with their permit that prohibits ongoing odor nuisances. Despite repeated complaints from the community, the emissions of odors and cancer-causing chemicals continue. Despite claims that manufacturing processes have been changed to reduce odorous emissions, the odors continue to be strong and unacceptable. Red Star Yeast must be prohibited from continuing their operations at this location in the middle of a neighborhood already hard hit by many pollution sources and health problems. It is not enough to talk about reducing some of the pollution: it is necessary for all of Red Star's pollution and this ongoing environmental injustice to end now.
